The Phone Co-op broadband services are now 'ADSL Max', the new BT standard for
broadband. This means two big changes:
Faster connection speeds of up to 8mbps - you will get the fastest speed
at which it is possible to connect you.
A new way of charging - instead of paying according to the speed of your connection, you pay
according to how much you use it.
Who will get ADSL Max?
All existing customers can apply for an upgrade to the new service. That is subject to availability
at the local exchange. This is free until December 31st, but will mean going on a 12 month contract.
I live in a remote area, is ADSL Max available here?
Check the full list if Max-enabled
exchanges here to see if yours is listed.
Will there be any disruption when services are changed?
You may experience some disruption to your service whilst it is upgraded to
ADSL Max. This disruption will be kept to an absolute minimum and you will
receive your username and password details for your ADSL Max service in the
post.
Disruption is possible during the first 10 days of the Max service, and speeds may differ greatly
during the initial 24-48 hours. You may also experience frequent disconnections of less than a minute in length.
This is not a fault.
This is because of monitoring systems used by BT to determine the Maximum Sustainable Rate (MSR) for your line.
The MSR will be set as the maximum speed you will be able to connect at.
What about 'Unlimited' services?
The existing Unlimited services will be replaced with new usage-based services, featuring generous
capacity allowances and a Fair Usage Policy
Will my existing ADSL equipment work with ADSL Max?
All existing equipment will work, but may not be able to take advantage of faster speeds.
For more information see if your equipment is shown here.
What sort of speed might I expect?
Most customers are likely to receive around 6.5Mbps for downloads, and an increase in upload speed too.
For more detail please see our FAQs page.
It should be noted that 8 Mbps is a theoretical maximum speed at the highest end of the scale. The maximum
speed is determined by factors such as the length and quality of the copper telephone line to the telephone
exchange.
ADSL MAX is a rate-adaptive product. This means that the speed at which it downloads and uploads will fluctuate.
These fluctuations may also change over time in response to any change in line or the environmental conditions
mentioned above.
During busy (high network usage) times, services operating at lines rates of 2Mbit/s or above will be similar
to that of current 2Mb fixed rate services, irrespective of line rate achieved. Services operating at below
2Mbit/s will be similar to that of current 512k fixed rate service.
The ability to take advantage of any increase in line rate to enable increased data throughput to and from
the BT network is dependant on the actual network capacity available at that time and that data throughput
equal to the maximum line rate may not initially be reached on some lines provided with the Service.
